It starts with the trolls at the beginning: They warn Elsa's family of impending danger. The exact words they use are:
"Fear will be your enemy."
"Fear will be your enemy."
What they mean has been understood in two ways: I'm only going to look at the first, most obvious one- that if people ever found out about Elsa's powers, the fear that they would feel towards her would only get her hurt. They tell Elsa to hide her powers at any cost. This is the first connection to closeted LGBTQ youth: they are told by society that if they ever came out of the closet, people's fear (or homophobia) would only make their lives worse.
This keeps Elsa- and by extension the LGBTQ youth- hidden. The mantra repeated throughout the movie begins when they are stuck hiding who they really are:
"Conceal, don't feel, don't let them know."
This connects to both situations.
Later, the prophecy comes to pass: Elsa's powers are inadvertently revealed, and her kingdom turns against her. This is similar to the disapproving family and friends when they find out about LGBTQ youth's true selves.
This brings us to the showstopper song: Let It Go. This song could be considered Elsa coming out of the closet and finally accepting herself for who she is. Some lyrics in the song are as follows:
"Don't let them know, well now they know!"
"Let it go, let it go!"
"Don't let them know, well now they know!"
"Let it go, let it go!"
"Can't hold it back anymore... turn away and slam the door!"
"I don't care, what they're going to say!"
"You'll never see me cry."
"That perfect girl is gone!"
"Here I stand, and here I'll stay!"
"Let the storm rage on, the cold never bothered me anyway."
These lyrics all show how Elsa- and the LGBTQ youth- finally learn to accept themselves for who they are.
There's a lot more, but these were the main points. So what do all of you think? This is all just pure speculation, but I have heard a lot of different people sharing this opinion.
